Backend Engineer — Payments
Gunj Solutions Private Limited · Pune · Hybrid
About the role
You will own our payments service end to end. That means the design, the code, the on-call rota when something goes wrong at 2am, and the conversation with product about what to build next. The service handles the money, so reliability, correctness and clear thinking under pressure matter more than throughput benchmarks.
The work is hybrid out of our Pune office.
What you will do
- Design, build and operate the payments service — APIs, data model, integrations with payment gateways, reconciliation, and the ledger that records what happened.
- Run the service in production: deploys, monitoring, alerting, capacity planning, and the on-call rota when the pager fires.
- Lead reviews for changes that touch money — schema migrations, gateway integrations, retry and idempotency logic — and be the person who pushes back on a design that is not safe enough.
- Work with product on what to build next, and with finance and ops on what reconciles at the end of the day.
- Chase down the awkward bugs: a transaction that came back twice, a webhook that arrived an hour late, a settlement file that does not match the ledger.
- Improve the way the team builds — CI, test coverage, runbooks, deployment safety — and write the kind of postmortems that actually change behaviour.
What we need
- 4 to 6 years building backend systems in Java with Spring Boot.
- Hands-on with PostgreSQL — schema design, query tuning, transactions, the boring parts that decide whether the system is correct.
- Has run something in production and carried the pager, not just watched dashboards.
- Thinks about failure modes before writing code — retries, idempotency, partial failures, what happens when the gateway is down.
Nice to have
- Payments, banking or any other domain where mistakes cost real money.
- Integration with a payment gateway, a ledger system, or reconciliation tooling.
- AWS or another cloud, and the usual production stack — Docker, Kubernetes, CI/CD, observability.
